1.Hard, Ain't It Hard

Hard, Ain't It Hard
The Kingston Trio
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie

- From their 1958 debut LP 'The Kingston Trio'

Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard
To love one who never did love you
Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard Great God
To love one who never will be true.

Well there is a house in this old town
And that's where my true love lays around
And she sits down upon another's knee (do tell)
And tells him what she never will tell me.

Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard (oh yes)
To love one who never did love you
Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard Great God
To love one who never will be true.

Oh well the first time I seen my true love
She was a'standing a'by my door
And the last time I seen her false-hearted smile
She was dead on that barroom floor. (porter)

Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard (oh yes)
To love one who never did love you
Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard Great God
To love one who never will be true.

Well who's gonna kiss your ruby lips?
Who's gonna hold your little hand?
And who's gonna do, well--you know what!
When I'm down in that promised land? (hey)

Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard (oh yes)
To love one who never did love you
Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard Great God
To love one who never will be true. (pick it)

Oh well don't drinkin?and gamblin'ill be true. (here we go)

Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard (oh yes)
To love one who never did love you
Oh well it's hard, ain't it hard, ain't it hard Great God
To love one who never will be true.

2.Ruben James

Ruben James*
The Kingston Trio

Did not chart, but they included it on their 1961 LP 'Close Up'
Written by Alex Harvey and Barry Etris
NOT to be confused with a totally different song with the same
title by Kenny
Rogers and the First Edition in 1969

Have you heard of the ship called 'The Good Ruben James?'
Armed by hard-fighting men both of honor and of fame
She flew the Stars and Stripes of the land of the free
But tonight she's in her grave at the bottom of the sea

CHORUS
Oh, tell me what were their names?, tell me what were their
names?
Did you have a friend on The Good Ruben James?
Oh, tell me what were their names?, tell me what were their
names?
Did you have a friend on The Good Ruben James?

One hundred men went down to their dark and watery grave
When that good ship went down, only forty-four were saved
Was the last day of October, they saved forty-four
From the dark, icy waters of that cold Iceland shore

CHORUS

It was there in the dark of that cold and watery night
They watched for the U-boat and they waited for a fight
Then a whine and a rock and a great explosion's roar
They laid the Ruben James on the cold ocean floor

CHORUS

Many years have passed since those brave men are gone
Those cold icy waters, they're still and they're calm
Many years have passed and still I wonder why
The worst of men must fight and the best of men must die

CHORUS

*TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: This is a true story. The Ruben James
(sometimes
spelled 'Reuben') was the first American ship lost in World War

3.The Legend Of Tom Dooley

The Legend Of Tom Dooley
Performed by The Kingston Trio

Through out history
There have been many songs
Written about the eternal triangle
This next one tells the story of Mr. Grayson
A beautiful woman and a condemed man
Named Tom Dooley
When the sun rises tomorrow
Tom Dooley must hang

Hang down your head Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

I met her on the mountain
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain
Stabbed her with my knife

This time tomorrow, reckon where I'll be
Hadn't it been for Grayson
I'd been in Tennesse

This time tomorrow, reckon where I'll be
Down in some lonesome valley
Hanging on a white oak tree

4.The Merry Minuet

The Merry Minuet
The Kingston Trio
Words and Music by Sheldon Harnick

-From their 1959 LP 'From the Hungry'

They're rioting in Africa (whistling)
They're starving in Spain (whistling)
There's hurricanes in Flo-ri-da (whistling)
And Texas needs rain
The whole world is festering with unhappy souls
The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles
Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch
AND I DON'T LIKE ANYBODY VERY MUCH!!

But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud
For man's been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud
And we know for certain that some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off
AND WE WILL ALL BE BLOWN AWAY!!

They're rioting in Africa (whistling)
There's strife in Iran
What nature doesn't so to us
Will be done by our fellow *man*---

5.The Tijuana Jail

The Tijuana Jail

Artists:The Kingston Trio (peak Billboard position # 12 in 1959)
Words and Music by Danny Thompson

(hoot of exultation)

We went one day about a month ago (a-ha-ha)
To have a little fu-un (a-ha) Mexico
We ended up in a gambling spot (oh yeah) a-ha-ha
Where the liquor flow-owed and the dice were hot

So here we a-are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no frie-ends to go our bail
So here we'll sta-ay 'cause we can't pa-a-a-a-ay
Just send our ma-ail to the Tijuana Jail

I was shootin?dice, rakin?in the dough (long green)
And then I hea-ard the whistle blow
We started to run when a man in blue
Said 'señor, come with me 'cause I want you.'

So here we a-are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no frie-ends to go our bail
So here we'll sta-ay 'cause we can't pay
Just send our mail to the Tijuana Jail (shout)

Just five hundred dollars and they'll set us free (shouted
excitement)
I couldn't raise a penny if ya threatened me
I know five 'hunderd' don't sound like much
But just try to find somebody to touch

So here we are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no frie-ends to go our bail
So here we'll sta-ay 'cause we can't pay
Just send our mai-il to the Tijuana Jail

So here we a-are in the Tijuana Ja-a-a-a-il
Ain't got no frie-eh-ends to go our bail
So here we'll sta-ay 'cause we can't pa-ay
Just send our mai-il to the Tijuana Jail

8.Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

作詞:Pete Seeger

Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls pick them, every one
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone to young men, every one
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young men gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers, every one
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

And where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the soldiers gone, a long long time ago?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, every one
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one
When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?

9.Zombie Jamboree

Zombie Jamboree
The Kingston Trio
Written by C.E. Mauge, Jr.

From the 3-CD set, 'The Kingston Trio-36 All
Time-Favorites':CEMA Special
Products; a Division of Capitol Records, Inc., S23-17653
A live performance

SPOKEN: Right now, as a point of information, something we
didn't know until
recently. Every year, in Trinidad, they have what is know as a
'calypsonian
carnival' in which the various native groups down there vie with
one another, uh,
musically, in order to find out who's the best extemporaneous
composer of them
all. And in the year 1955, Lord Invader and his Twelve
Penetrators took the title
with this next song, based on a theme by Goethe involving the
dance of the dead.
Well, uh, Invader could only draw from experience so he called
it, of course,
'Zombie Jamboree, the Song That Killed Calypso.'

Well, now
Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

Now hear me callin'
Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

Zombie Jamboree took place in a New York cemetery (Where?)
Zombie Jamboree took place in Long Island cemetery
Zombies from all parts of the island (Where?)
Some of them are great Calypsonians
Hey, since the season was Carnivale
They got together in Bacchanal

Whatcha doin'?
Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

(Unintelligible spoken aside)
Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

One female zombie wouldn't behave
She say she want me for a slave
In the one hand she's holding a quart of wine (Whoa)
In the other she's pointin' that she'll be mine
Now believe me folks, yes I had to run (Why?)
Husband of a zombie ain't no fun (No nice!)
I says 'Oh, no my turtle dove'
'That old bag of bones I cannot love'

Whatcha doin'?
Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

What a good game!
Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

Right then and there she raise a *feet*
'I'm a-going to get you now, my sweet'
'I'm gonna make you call me Sweetie Pie'
I says 'Oh, no, get back-you lie'
I may be lyin' but you will see (What?)
After you kiss this dead zomb-ie (Blecccch!!!)
No, I've never seen such a horror in me life
Can you imagine me with a zombie wife? (YES!)

Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

SPOKEN: You're all alone, you know.

Back to back, belly to belly
Well I don't give a damn
'cause it doesn't matter really
Back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: *feet* is adjudged to be the phonetic
spelling of the
island pronunciation of the word 'fit.' These lyrics are
uncertain but it sounds as if
'raise a fit' could be the equivalent to 'have a fit': in other
words, this female
zombie was upset at his non-acceptance.

10.Three Song

作詞:Mason Williams

Little winds sing a song of the sun in the sky
And I know, like the wind, the songs will always be there
In your hair, soft and warm, light of dawn, shining fair
In your voice, as you sing, the songs will always be there

Little winds
(In your hair)
Sing a song
(soft and warm)
Of the sun
(Light of dawn)
In the sky
(Shining fair)
And I know
(In your voice)
Like the wind
(As you sing)
The songs will always be there

Little wines are the kiss of the fruit from the earth
And I know, there I taste surely the sweetest of all
In your lips, sweet as dew, on the vine in the fall
The first kiss from your lips is surely the sweetest of all

Little wines
(In your lips)
Are the kiss
(Sweet as dew)
Of the fruit
(On the vine)
From the earth
(In the fall)
And I know
(The first kiss)
There I taste
(From your lips)
Is surely the sweetest of all

Little stars
(In your eyes)
Twinkle bright
(Like the sky)
In the still
(Of the night)
Sky above
(It is true)
And I know
(That I love)
Only you
(Only you)
Wish it so to be true
Wish it so to be true

11.Poverty Hill

作詞:Fred Hellerman, Frances Minkoff

They come in their summery dresses and jackets so fine
The rich folks who measure success with a big dollar sign
They gaze with delight with the rocks and the scraggly pines
They come in the spring and they stay till the fall
On Paradise Mountain away from it all

Stubble and stone make a hard row to hoe
What little will grow, the drought will kill
The summer folks call it Paradise Mountain
But we call it Poverty Hill

They say we have beautiful faces as grainy as wood
Yeah, they'd like to live here of all places if only they could
Well, we don't get those wood, grainy faces from livin' too good
It's the rocks and the dust, and the sun and the heat
It's too much of work and too little to eat

Stubble and stone make a hard row to hoe
What little will grow, the drought will kill
The summer folks call it Paradise Mountain
But we call it Poverty Hill

They pack and they say, what a pity that they have to go
They say that Old Smokey's so pretty all covered with snow
But how we get through the winter they never will know
No lard for the pantry, no grist for the mill
And winter's are cold over poverty hill

Stubble and stone make a hard row to hoe
What little will grow, the drought will kill
The summer folks call it Paradise Mountain
But we call it Poverty Hill, yes, we call it Poverty Hill

12.The Wines of Maderia

作詞:Jane Bowers, Dave Guard

I've tasted the wines of France
And I've tasted the wines of Spain
And though many a wine is the same
There are none like the wines of Madeira

I've courted the girls of France
And I've courted the girls of Spain
And though most pretty girls are the same
There are none like the girls of Madeira.

Oh, the girls who tend the vineyards
In the provinces of France
Are the gayest girls for courting
And they love to sing and dance

And they're happy in their vineyards
And they smile upon romance
And indeed, I would defend for you
The provinces of France

But there's not a vineyard anywhere
That can compare with what I know
Why? I'll tell you why or better yet
Come and we'll go

Oh, the girls who tend the vineyards
In the provinces of Spain
They are spirited and fiery
Whether beautiful or plain

They are splendid in their vineyards
In their languorous refrain
And indeed, I would defend for you
The provinces of Spain

But there's not a vineyard anywhere
That can compare with what I know
Why? I'll tell you why or better yet
Come and we'll go

You boast of the wines in France
And you boast of the wines in Spain
But your boast makes it very plain
That you not had the wines of Madeira

You boast of the girls in France
And you boast of the girls in Spain
But your boast makes it very plain
That you've not seen the girls of Madeira

13.Sail away Ladies

作詞:John (arr) Stewart

Ain't no use to sit and cry
You'll be an angel by and by

Ain't no use to sit and cry
(Ain't no use to sit and cry)
You'll be an angel by and by
(You'll be an angel by and by)

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

I got a home in Tennessee
That's the place I wanna be
If I ever get my way
Tennessee is where I'll stay

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

Ever I get my new house done
Give my old one to my son
Ever I finish this porch and stairs
Lie around in my rockin' chair

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

Ain't no use to sit and cry
(Sail away, ladies, sail away)
You'll be an angel by and by
(Sail away, ladies, sail away)
Won't be a long time 'round this place
(Sail away, ladies, sail away)
So get a look at my funny face
(Sail away, ladies, sail away)

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Can't she rock 'em?
Daddy oh

14.Children of the Morning

作詞:John Stewart

Dance to the circle, watch it grow
Turning like forever, movin' slow
It's only a moment, yes, I know
Children of the morning told me so

Burn with the fire, make it bright
Lost within the space of outer sight
One lonely flame against the night
Children of the morning, make it light

Worn by a voice upon the breeze
Glistened by the waters rollin' free
Hidden in the color of a tree
Children of the morning, it is thee

Stand upon the mountain, it is done
Watch them at the crossroads as they come
Blinded by another winter's sun
Children of the morning, you have won

Dance to the circle, watch it grow
Turning like forever, movin' slow
It's only a moment, yes, I know
Children of the morning told me so
Children of the morning told me so

15.Come Along Julie

作詞:John Stewart

Down through the meadow I was humming a song
Looking at the stars as I take my little Julie back home

Watching her eyes as I tell her of the day
The day that's gonna come when I'll take my little Julie away

Come along, Julie, follow the sun
We'll be leaving long before the fall winds come

Listen for a robin singing in the trees
Look toward the hills and be watching little Julie for me

Come along, Julie, follow the sun
We'll be leaving long before the fall winds come

Long before the fall winds come
Long before the fall winds come

16.500 Miles

作詞:B Bare, Hedy West, C Williams

If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

A hundred miles, a hundred miles
A hundred miles, a hundred miles
you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

Lord, I'm one, Lord, I'm two, Lord, I'm three, Lord, I'm four
Lord, I'm five hundred miles a way from home

Away from home, away from home
Away from home, away from home
Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
Lord, I can't go back home this-a way

This-a way, this-a way, this-a way, this-a way
Lord, I can't go back home this-a way

If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

A hundred miles, a hundred miles
A hundred miles, a hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

17.Stay Awhile

作詞:Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, John Stewart

Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
We'll never want to leave ya
Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
'Til we come back to see ya

As we were walkin' down to Wales one day
We chanced upon young Tommy Clancy
And we called to him, 'Could you go a drink?'
Said 'He'll ask that's my fancy'

Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
We'll never want to leave ya
Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
'Til we come back to see ya

Oh, we drank to Tommy and he did the same
We drank to all his hellish brothers
And we drank to home and the girls we've known
Then had one for our mothers

Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
We'll never want to leave ya
Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
'Til we come back to see ya

And then we sang those songs that we sang before
We sang that we would drink forever
When the last drop passed our lips that day
We sang this song together

Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
We'll never want to leave ya
Oh, we'll stay awhile to bide awhile
'Til we come back to see ya

Coo coo-u, I think coo coo, coo, coo coo-u
Coo coo-u, I think coo coo, coo, coo coo-u

How did you get so coo coo? How did you?
How did you get so coo coo? How did you?

They say that it's a fact that your head is cracked
(Ya tambien somos locos)
Well, I know it's true, you are coo coo, too
(Ya tambien somos locos)

Once again I said you have lost your head
(Ya tambien somos locas)
Since your ego's curbed, you are too disturbed
(Ya tambiem somos locas)

How did you get so coo coo? How did you?
How did you get so coo coo? How did you?

You are paranoid and your head is void
(Ya tambien somos locos)
Since your wig is flipped your skull's come unzipped
(Ya tambien somos locos)

How did you get so coo coo? How did you?
How did you get so coo coo? How did you?

20.Three Jolly Coachmen

作詞:Dave Guard

(Dave Guard)
One, two and three

Jolly coachmen sat at an English tavern
Three jolly coachmen sat at an English tavern
And they decided, and they decided
And they decided to have another flagon

Landlord, fill the flowing bowl until it doth run over
Landlord, fill the flowing bowl until it doth run over
For tonight we merr-I be, for tonight we merr-I be
Tomorrow we'll be sober
(What?)

Here's to the man who drinks dark ale
And goes to bed quite mellow
Here's to the man who drinks dark ale
And goes to bed quite mellow

He lives as he ought to live
He lives as he ought to live
He'll die a jolly good fellow
(Ha, ha, ha)

Here's to the man who drinks water pure
And goes to bed quite sober
Here's to the man who drinks water pure
And goes to bed quite sober

He falls as the leaves do fall
He falls as the leaves do fall
He'll die before October
(Ho, ho, ho)

Here's to the maid who steals a kiss
And runs to tell her mother
Here's to the maid who steals a kiss
And runs to tell her mother

She's a foolish, foolish thing
She's a foolish, foolish thing
For she'll not get another
(Pity)

Here's to the maid who steals a kiss
And stays to steal another
Here's to the maid who steals a kiss
And stays to steal another

She's a boon to all mankind
She's a boon to all mankind
For soon she'll be a mother

21.Less of Me

作詞:Glen Campbell

Let me be a little kinder
Let me be a little blinder
To the faults of those about me
Let me praise a little more

Let me be, when I am weary
Just a little bit more cheery
Think a little more of others
And a little less of me

Let me be a little braver
When temptation bids me waver
Let me strive a little harder
To be all that I should be

Let me be a little meeker
With a brother that is weaker
Let me think more of my neighbor
And a little less of me

Let me be, when I am weary
Just a little bit more cheery
Let me serve a little better
Those that I am striving for

Let me be a little meeker
With the brother that is weaker
Think a little more of others
And a little less of me

22.They Call the Maria

作詞:Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe

Away out here, they have a name
For rain and wind and fire
The rain is 'Tess', the fire's 'Joe'
And they call the wind 'Maria'

Maria blows the stars around
Sets the clouds a flyin'
Maria makes the mountains sound
Like folks was out there dyin'

Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria

Before I knew Maria's name
And heard her wail and whinin'
I had a gal and she had me
And the sun was always shinin'

But then one day, I left my gal
I left her far behind me
And now I'm lost, so gol' darn lost
Not even God can find me

Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria

Out here, they have a name
For rain, the wind and fire only
When you're lost and all alone
There ain't no name for lonely

I'm a lost and lonely man
Without a star to guide me
Maria, blow my love to me
I need my gal beside me

Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria
Maria, Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria

23.They Are Gone

作詞:Mason Williams

The moments turn to hours
And the hours turn to days
And I've seen so many lost ones pass away

And they're gone
Yes, they're gone
They are gone to stay

The hill sides are so lovely
In their springtime fine array
But I've seen too many flowers fade away

And they're gone
Yes, they're gone
They are gone to stay

The lovers pass by my window
Never caring if they stray
But I've seen so many lovers lose their way

And they're gone
Yes, they're gone
They are gone to stay
They are gone to stay

24.Tijuana Jail

作詞:Denny Thompson

We went one day about a month ago
To have a little fun in Mexico
We ended up in a gambling spot
Where the liquor flowed and the dice were hot

So here we are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no friends to go our bail
So here we'll stay 'cause we can't pay
Just send our mail to the Tijuana Jail

I was shootin' dice, rakin' in the dough
And then I heard the whistle blow
We started to run when a man in blue
Said, 'Senior, come with me 'cause I want you'

So here we are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no friends to go our bail
So here we'll stay 'cause we can't pay
Just send our mail to the Tijuana Jail

Just five hundred dollars and they'll set us free
I couldn't raise a penny if ya threatened me
I know five hundred, don't sound like much
But just try to find, somebody to touch

So here we are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no friends to go our bail
So here we'll stay 'cause we can't pay
Just send our mail to the Tijuana Jail

So here we are in the Tijuana Jail
Ain't got no friends to go our bail
So here we'll stay 'cause we can't pay
Just send our mail to the Tijuana Jail

25.Fast Freight

作詞:Terry Gilkyson

As I listen for the whistle, lie awake and wait
Wish the railroad didn't run so near
'Cause the rattle and clatter of that old fast freight
Keeps on makin' music in my ear, go bum again, go bum again, ooh

Hear the whistle blow, hear the whistle blow
Clickety clack, clickety clack, the wheels are saying to the
railroad track
Well, if you go, you can't come back, well if you go, you can't
come back
Well if you go, you can't come back, if you go, you can't come
back
If you go, you can't come back

Well, I wouldn't give a nickel for the bum I use to be
Work as hard as any man in town
I got a pretty gal, she thinks the world of me
Man would be a fool to let her down, go bum again, go bum again,
ooh

Hear the whistle blow, hear the whistle blow
Clickety clack, clickety clack, the wheels are saying to the
railroad track
Well, if you go, you can't come back, well if you go, you can't
come back
Well if you go, you can't come back, if you go, you can't come
back
If you go, you can't come back

So every night I listen, wonder if it's late
In my dreams I'm ridin' on that train
I feel my pulse are beatin' with that old fast freight
And thank the Lord I'm just a bum again, go bum again, go bum
again, ooh

Hear the whistle blow, hear the whistle blow
Clickety clack, clickety clack, the wheels are saying to the
railroad track
Well, if you go, you can't come back, well if you go, you can't
come back
Well if you go, you can't come back, if you go, you can't come
back
If you go, you can't come back

26.Banua

作詞:David Guard, Traditional

Banua, Banua, Banua, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know, again
Banua, Banua, Banua, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know

Won't you come to me, baby?
Won't you bring me my bail?
For a drink and a fight on a Saturday night
They put down in the Banua jail

Banua, Banua, Banua, oh, oh, oh, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know, once again
Banua, Banua, Banua, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know

I didn't mean to be fightin'
And bringin' you all of this shame
But the tongue of Jonathan Brighton
Was scandalizin' your name

Banua, Banua, Banua, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know

This Banua jail is cold and damp
The rats, they cover the floor
Just ten and three will set me free
And I'll be yours forever more, soft

Banua, Banua, Banua, oh, oh, oh, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know, once again
Banua, Banua, Banua, oh
Banua, Banua, baby, I don't know

Banua

27.Santy Anno

作詞:David Guard, Traditional

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

We're sailin' 'cross the river from Liverpool
Heave away, Santy Anno
Around Cape Horn to 'Frisco Bay
'Way out in Californio

So, heave her up and away we'll go
Heave away, Santy Anno
Heave her up and away we'll go
'Way out in Californio

There's plenty of gold, so I've been told
Heave away, Santy Anno
Plenty of gold, so I've been told
'Way out in Californio

So, heave her up and away we'll go
Heave away, Santy Anno
Heave her up and away we'll go
'Way out in Californio

Ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh

Well, back in the days of forty-nine
Heave away, Santy Anno
Back in the days of the good old times
'Way out in Californio

So, heave her up and away we'll go
Heave away, Santy Anno
Heave her up and away we'll go
'Way out in Californio

Ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh
Ooh ooh, ooh, ooh

28.Bay of Mexico

作詞:Dave (arr.) Guard, Gretchen Guard

'Round the bay of Mexico
Way up, Suzianna, Mexico is the place I belong in
'Round the bay of Mexico

Wind from the East and it's blowin' strong
Way up, Suzianna
Looks like a hurricane comin' along, well
'Round the bay of Mexico
The wind will blow and that rain will pour
Way up, Suzianna
Better get the sugar boats up on the shore, well
'Round the bay of Mexico

'Round the bay of Mexico
Way up, Suzianna, Mexico is the place I belong in
'Round the bay of Mexico

Why those young gals love me so?
Way up, Suzianna
'Cause I don't tell everything that I know
'Round the bay of Mexico
When I was a young man and in my prime
Way up, Suzianna
Caught those young girls ten at a time, boys
'Round the bay of Mexico

'Round the bay of Mexico
Way up, Suzianna, Mexico is the place I belong in
'Round the bay of Mexico

Nassau girls ain't got no comb
Way up, Suzianna
They comb their hair with a whipper back bone
'Round the bay of Mexico
When I leave the sea, I'll settle down
Way up, Suzianna
With a big, fat mama from Bimini town
'Round the bay of Mexico, 'round the bay of Mexico

'Round the bay of Mexico
Way up, Suzianna, Mexico is the place I belong in
'Round the bay of Mexico, 'round the bay of Mexico

29.Little Maggie

作詞:Dave Guard

Oh, well, yonder stands little Maggie
With a dram glass in her hand
She drinkin' away her troubles, oh, Lord
And foolin' another man

How could I ever stand it
Just to see them two blue eyes?
They shine just like the diamonds
Like the diamonds in the sky

Pretty flowers were made for bloomin'
Pretty stars were made to shine
Pretty girls were made for boys to love
Surely Maggie was made for mine

Oh, well, yonder stands little Maggie
With a dram glass in her hand
She drinkin' away her troubles, oh, Lord
And foolin' another man

Well, they marched me down to the station
With my suitcase in my hand
I'm goin' away for to leave you, my love
Goin' to a far distant land

Oh, well, sometimes I have a nickel
And sometimes I have a dime
And sometimes I have ten dollars, oh, Lord
Just to pay little Maggie's fine

Oh, well, yonder stands little Maggie
With a dram glass in her hand
She drinkin' away her troubles, oh, Lord
And foolin' another man
And foolin' another man

30.When the Saints Go Marching In

作詞:David Guard, Traditional

Hey, we are followin' the footsteps
Of those who've gone before
And we'll all be reunited
On that new and sunlit shore

Oh, when the saints, go marchin' in
Go marchin' in, yeah, when the saints
Oh, when the saints go marchin' in
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number
When the saints go marchin' in

And when the sun, oh, when the sun
Refuse to shine, refuse to shine
And when the sun refuse to shine
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number
When the sun refuse to shine

And when the trumpet sounds its call
And when the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number
When the trumpet sounds its call

Some say, this world of trouble
Is the only world we need
But, I'm waitin' for that mornin'
Oh, when the new world is revealed

Oh, when the new world is revealed
Oh, when the new world is revealed
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number
When the new world is revealed

Yes, when the saints go marchin' in
Go marchin' in
Oh, when the saints, go marchin' in
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number
When the saints go marchin' in

31.Ann

作詞:Billy Wheeler

I know, I'll never meet another hunk or woman like my Ann
She makes me feel like a great big man
I'm gonna go tell her mama what I think about her
Say, thank you ma'am for giving me your daughter Ann

She sure is stacked from her toes to the birdie little nape of
her neck
She's packed like a seed in a grape, she's smooth as marble skin
When I see her I believe, I'm a real young guy
And every time I go to work, I think I might die if I can't
hurry home again

If the good Lord worked all night at makin' me a female plan
I'd say, no thanks Lord, I'll just keep Ann

How could I ever look at any other woman when I've got Ann
I feel so good when she takes my hand, yeah
I'm gonna go tell her daddy what I think about her
Say, thank you man, for giving me your daughter Ann

When I come home and I feel like I've been run over by a ten-ton
truck
She can rub my shoulder and ease my aches and pains
If I lose my job and I'm down to a silver dollar and I feel like
A dried up gourd in a holler, she soothes my brow like summer
rain

If the good Lord worked a hundred years at makin' me a female
plan
I'd say, no, thanks, Lord, I'll just keep Ann

I know, I'll never meet another hunk or woman like my Ann
She makes me feel like a great big man
If the good Lord worked a hundred years at makin' me a female
plan
I'd say, no, thanks, Lord, I'll just keep Ann
I'd say, no, thanks, Lord, I'll just keep Ann

32.Run the Ridges

作詞:John Stewart

Well, I hope to tell you, Johnny, that I lay that rifle down
But leave the noose and the calaboose and headed for another
town

Well, I've got your name in San Jose and your picture's there to
see
And they're shootin' men in Texas just because they look like me

And we will run the ridges of our green land Tennessee
And we will hide for forty years if that's what's meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be, meant to be

Maybe we could try Mexico and cross the desert sand
But they're guardin' 'cross the border 'case we swim the Rio
Grande

And we will run the ridges of our green land Tennessee
And we will hide for forty years if that's what's meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be, meant to be

Well, they'll rope and tie you, Johnny, and they'll throw you to
the ground
And they'll let you hang a week or two 'fore they cut your body
down

And we will run the ridges of our green land Tennessee
And we will hide for forty years if that's what's meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be

And we will run the ridges of our green land Tennessee
And we will hide for forty years if that's what's meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be, meant to be
Meant to be, meant to be, meant to be

33.They Call the Wind Maria

作詞:Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe

Away out here they've got a name
For rain and wind and fire
The rain is Tess, the fire's Joe
And they call the wind Maria

Maria blows the stars around
And sets the clouds a-flyin'
Maria makes the mountains sound
Like folks was out there dyin'

Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria

Before I knew Maria's name
And heard her wail and whinin'
I had a gal and she had me
And the sun was always shinin'

But then one day I left my gal
I left her far behind me
And now I'm lost so gol darn lost
Not even God can find me

Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria

Out here they have a name for rain
Wind and fire only
But when you're lost and all alone
There ain't no name for lonely

I'm a lost and lonely man
Without a star to guide me
Maria blow my love to me
I need my gal beside me

Maria, Maria
They call the wind Maria
Maria, Maria
They call the wind maria

34.Scotch and Soda

作詞:Dave Guard

Scotch and soda, mud in your eye
Baby, do I feel high?
Oh, me, oh, my, do I feel high?

Dry martini, jigger of gin
Oh, what a spell you've got me in
Oh, my, do I feel high?

People won't believe me
They'll think that I'm just braggin'
But I could feel the way I do
And still be on the wagon

All I need is one of your smiles
Sunshine of your eyes, oh, me, oh, my
Do I feel higher than a kite can fly?
Give me lovin', baby, I feel high

People won't believe me
They'll think that I'm just braggin'
But I could feel the way I do
And still be on the wagon

All I need is one of your smiles
Sunshine of your eyes, oh, me, oh, my
Do I feel higher than a kite can fly?
Give me lovin', baby, I feel high

35.South Coast

作詞:Richard Dehr, Sam Eskin, Lillian Bos Ross, Frank Miller

South Coast, the wild coast is lonely
You may win at the game at Jolon
But the lion still rules the Barranca
And a man there is always alone

My name is Juan Hano De Castro
My father was a Spanish grandee
But I won my wife in a card game
To hell with the lords o'er the sea

I picked up the ace, I had won her
My heart, which was down at my feet
Jumped up to my throat in a hurry
Like a warm summers' day, she was sweet

South Coast, the wild coast is lonely
You may win at the game at Jolon
But the lion still rules the Barranca
And a man there is always alone

Her arms had to tighten around me
As we rode up the hills from the South
Not a word did I hear from her that day
Or a kiss from her pretty red mouth

We came to my cabin at twilight
The stars twinkled out on the coast
She soon loved the valley, the orchard
But I knew that she loved me the most

South Coast, the wild coast is lonely
You may win at the game at Jolon
But the lion still rules the Barranca
And a man there is always alone

Then I got hurt in a landslide
With crushed hip and twice-broken bone
She saddled our pony like lightning
Rode off in the night, all alone

The lion screamed in the Barranca
The pony fell back on the slide
My young wife lay dead in the moonlight
My heart died that night with my bride

South Coast, the wild coast is lonely
You may win at the game at Jolon
But the lion still rules the Barranca
And a man there is always alone
And a man there is always alone

36.Hard, Ain't It Hard

作詞:Woody Guthrie

Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard
(Oh, yes)
To love one who never did love you?
Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard?
Great God to love one who never will be true?

Well, there is a house in this old town
That's where my true love lays around
She sits down upon another's knee
(Do tell)
And tells him what she never will tell me

Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard
(Oh, yes)
To love one who never did love you?
Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard?
Great God to love one who never will be true?

The first time I seen my true love
She was a-standin' by my door
And the last time I seen her false-hearted smile
She was dead on that bar room floor!
(Poor girl!)

Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard
(Oh, yes)
To love one who never did love you?
Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard?
Great God to love one who never will be true?

Well, who's gonna kiss your ruby lips?
(Not you, sweetie!)
Who's gonna hold your little hand?
(Hand?)
Who's gonna do, well, you know what
When I'm down in that promised land?
(I will!)

Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard
(Oh, yes)
To love one who never did love you?
Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard?
Great God to love one who never will be true?

Well, don't go drinkin' and gamblin'
Don't go there, your sorrows for to drown
This hard liquor place is a low-down disgrace
It's the meanest damn place in this town!

Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard
(Oh, yes)
To love one who never did love you?
Well, it's hard, ain't it hard? Ain't it hard?
Great God to love one who never will be true?

37.Chilly Winds

作詞:John E A Phillips, John C Stewart

I'm goin' where them chilly winds don't blow
Gonna find a true love that is where I want to go
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

Sing your song, sing it soft and low
Sing it for your baby and then I'll have to go
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

Wish I was a headlight on a westbound train
I'd shine my light on cool Colorado range
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

If you're feelin' lonely, if you're feelin' low
Remember that I loved you more than you will ever know
Goin' where them chilly winds don't blow

I'm leavin' in the springtime, won't be back till fall
If I can forget you, I might not come back at all
Out where them chilly winds don't blow
Out where them chilly winds don't blow
Out where them chilly winds don't blow

38.Long Time Blues

作詞:Williams Mason D

Sittin' by the window, waitin' for the dawn
Waitin' for a girl, a long time gone
Long time gone is a lonesome sound

Long time blues is a hard way down

Walkin' by the river, walkin' in the rain
Down by the depot waitin' for the train
Long time gone is the evening train

Long time blues is an achin' pain
Long time blues is an achin' pain

Listen to the sparrow singin' their song
Listen for a voice a long time gone
Long time gone is a silent song

Long time blues keep comin' on

Sittin' by the window, waitin' for the dawn
Waitin' for a girl, a long time gone
Long time gone is a lonesome sound

Long time blues is a hard way down
Long time blues is a hard way down

39.Love's Been Good to Me

作詞:Rod Mckuen

I have been a rover, I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways, never found a home
Still and all, I'm happy, the reason is
You see, once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

There was a girl in Denver before the summer's storm
Oh, her eyes were tender, oh, her arms were warm
And she could smile away the thunder
Kiss away the rain and even though she's gone away
You won't hear me complain

I have been a rover, I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways, never found a home
Still and all, I'm happy, the reason is
You see, once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

There was a girl in Portland before the winter chill
We use to go a-courtin' along October Hill
And she could laugh away the dark clouds
Cry away the snow
It seems like only yesterday as down the road I go

I have been a rover, I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways, never found a home
Still and all, I'm happy, the reason is
You see, once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

Once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

40.Oh, Cindy

One, two, three, four
I wish I was an apple
A-hangin' on a tree
And every time my Cindy passed
She'd take a bite of me

Get along, home, Cindy
Cindy, get along home
Get along home, Cindy
Cindy, I'll marry you some time

Cindy got religion
She had it once before
But when she heard my ole banjo
She's the first one on the floor

Get along, home, Cindy
Cindy, get along home
Get along home, Cindy
Cindy, I'll marry you some time

She told me that she loved me
She called me sugar plum
She throwed her arms around me
I thought my time had come!

Get along, home, Cindy
Cindy, get along home
Get along home, Cindy
Cindy, I'll marry you some time
Get along home

Wished I had a dollar
Wished I had a dime
I'd buy a jar of cider
And stay happy all the time

Get along, home, Cindy
Cindy, get along home
Get along home, Cindy
Cindy, I'll marry you some time

The last time I saw Cindy
She had a funny look
She opened her mouth and then she said
Ya'll sign my autograph book

Get along, home, Cindy
Cindy, get along home
Get along home, Cindy
Cindy, I'll marry you some time
Get along, home, Cindy
Cindy, get along home
Get along home, Cindy
Cindy, I'll marry you some time

41.New York Girls

作詞:Traditional

Shipmates listen unto me
'll tell you in my song of things
That happened to me
When I come home from Hong Kong

To me way, you Santy, my dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?

As I walked down to Chatham Street
A fair maid I did meet
She asked me, please, to see her home
She lived on Bleecker Street

Now, if you'll only come with me
You can have a treat
You can have a glass of brandy
And something nice to eat

To me way, you Santy, my dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?

Before we sat down to eat
We had several drinks
The liquor was so awful strong
I quickly fell asleep

To me way, you Santy, my dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?

When I awoke next mornin'
I had an achin' head
My gold watch and my pocketbook
And the lady friend had fled

Now lookin' around this little room
Nothin' could I see
But a woman's shoes and apron
Which now belong to me

To me way, you Santy, my dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?

Now dressed in the lady's apron
I wandered most forlorn
'Til Martin Churchill took me in
And he sent me 'round Cape Horn

To me way, you Santy, my dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?
To me way, Santy, my dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?

42.Hit and Run

作詞:Stewart John C

I was lookin' at the sun, pardon me, I didn't know it can't be
done
I was lookin' at the sun, I was lookin' at the sun
I was callin' back my youth, pardon me, did you want to use the
booth?
I was callin' back my youth, I was callin' back my youth

I don't listen to the fools that are makin' up the rules
I'm a havin' too much fun
Doin' what I want to, hit and run, doin' what I want to, hit and
run
Hit and run, hit and run, hit and run

So my world is made of paint, pardon me, I didn't know that
you're a saint
So my world is made of paint, so my world is made of paint
You are lookin' for the truth, pardon me, I think your poodle's
on the roof
You are lookin' for the truth, you are lookin' for the truth

I don't listen to the fools that are makin' up the rules
I'm a havin' too much fun
Doin' what I want to, hit and run, doin' what I want to, hit and
run
Hit and run, hit and run, hit and run

I may never be that good, pardon me, I never said I ever would
I may never be that good, I may never be that good
I was lookin' at the sun, pardon me, I didn't know it can't be
done
I was lookin' at the sun, I was lookin' at the sun, I was
lookin' at the sun

I don't listen to the fools that are makin' up the rules
I'm a havin' too much fun
Doin' what I want to, hit and run, doin' what I want to, hit and
run
Hit and run, hit and run, hit and run, hit and run, hit and run

43.Where I'm Bound

作詞:Tom Paxton

It's a long and a dusty road
It's a hard and a heavy load
And the folks we meet ain't always kind
Some are bad and some are good
Some have done the best they could
Some have tried to ease our troublin' mind

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

I have traveled across this land
Just a doin' the best I can
Tryin' to find what I was meant to do
And the faces that I see
Are as worried as can be
Looks like they've been wonderin' too

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

I had a buddy, way back home
But he started out to roam
And I hear that he's out by Monterey
And sometimes, when I've had a few
His voice comes singin' through
And I'm goin' out to see him some old day

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

If you see us passin' by
And you sit and you wonder why
And you wish that you were a rambler too
Nail your shoes to the kitchen floor
Lace 'em up, bar the door
And thank the stars for the roof that's over you

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

44.Rusting in the Rain

作詞:Rod Mc Kuen

The old gate is rusting in the rain
Children, comin' home from school
No longer skim their pebbles on the old town creek
That just around the bend becomes a pool

And we've all grown older
Come see where we have been
Out here rusting in the rain

The old house is creaking in the rain
And lovers comin' down the hill
No longer stop to linger by the old dead tree
They took away for lumber to the mill

And we've all grown older
Come see where we have been
Out here rusting in the rain

And we've all grown older
Come see where we have been
Out here rusting in the rain

The old world is dying in the rain
The summer comin' every year
No longer stops to wonder as it goes along its way
Did anybody ever live here?

And we've all grown older
Come see where we have been
Out here rusting in the rain

And we've all grown older
Come see where we have been
Out here rusting in the rain

Out here rusting in the rain
Out here rusting in the rain
Out here rusting in the rain

45.Merry Little Minuet

作詞:Sheldon Harnick

They're rioting in Africa
They're starving in Spain
There's hurricanes in Florida
And Texas needs rain

The whole world is festering
With unhappy souls
The French hate the Germans
The Germans hate the Poles

Italians hate Yugoslavs
South Africans hate the Dutch
And I don't like
Anybody very much

But we can be tranquil
And thankful and proud
For man's been endowed
With a mushroom shaped cloud

And we know for certain
That some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off
And we will all be blown away

They're rioting in Africa
There's strife in Iran
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow man

46.Adieu to My Island

作詞:Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane

I must bid adieu to my island
Leave the nights by the sea
My heart is heavy inside me
Bow down just like the palm tree

The nights may be warm in Hawaii
And the sun may shine on Rome
But the steel bands are playing in Trinidad
And my heart tells me that's home

I must bid adieu to my island
Leave the nights by the sea
My heart is heavy inside me
Bow down just like the palm tree

I've traveled around on the sailing ships
From Barbados to Bombay
But the laughter in the market in Trinidad
Tells me that's where I should stay

The sun's comin' out of the ocean now
In an hour I'll be gone
Watch from the mountain when the ships sail in
For the one that I'll be on

I must bid adieu to my island
Leave the nights by the sea
My heart is heavy inside me
Bow down just like the palm tree

47.My Ramblin' Boy

作詞:Tom Paxton

Fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy
Yes, fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy

He was a man and a friend always
We rambled 'round in my hard, old days
He never cared if I had no dough
We rambled 'round in the rain or snow

Fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy
Yes, fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy

Late one night in a jungle camp
The weather it was cold and damp
He got the chills and he got them bad
I lost the only friend I had

Fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy
Yes, fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy

He left me here to ramble on
My ramblin' pal is dead and gone
If, when we die, we go some where
I'll bet you a dollar he's a ramblin' there

Fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy
Yes, fare thee well, my ramblin' boy
May all your rambles bring you joy

May all your rambles bring you joy
May all your rambles bring you joy

48.Rocky

Irgendeiner schoenen jungen lady
Der gefiel der fremde kavalier
Sie ging aus und mit ihm tanzen
Und sie suchten lange noch nach ihr

Rocky, du musst reiten durch die weiten der prairie
Rocky, du kommst weiter
Doch nach hause kommst du nie

49.Rider

Songwriters:Judy Henske, Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane

Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone
Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss your daddy rollin' in your arms

Well, the sun's gonna shine on my back door some day
I said, 'The sun's gonna shine on my back door some day'
Then the wind from the river's gonna blow all my troubles away

Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone
Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss your daddy rollin' in your arms

Well, I ain't got a nickel, no, I ain't got a lousy dime
Well, I ain't got a nickel, no, I ain't got a lousy dime
But I got a long way to go 'fore the end of my time

It takes a hard hearted woman to make a long time man feel bad
It takes a hard hearted woman to make a long time man feel bad
'Cause it makes him remember the long hard road that he's had

Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone
Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss your daddy rollin' in your arms
Well, I know you, Rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone

50.Desert Pete

Songwriters:Billy Edd Wheeler

'You've got to prime the pump, you must have faith and belief
You've got to give of yourself 'fore you're worthy to receive
Drink all the water you can hold, wash your face, cool your feet
Leave the bottle full for others, thank you kindly, Desert Pete'

I was travelin' West of Buckskin on my way to a cattle run
Cross a little cactus desert under a hot barkenin' sun
I was thirsty down to my toenails, stopped to rest me on a stump
But I tell ya I just couldn't believe it when I saw that water
pump

I took it to be a mirage at first, it'll fool a thirsty man
Then I saw a note stuck in a bakin' powder can
'This pump is old', the note began, 'But she works so give her a
try
I put a new sucker washer in her, you may find the leather dry'

So you'll have to prime the pump, work that handle like there's
a fire
Under that rock you'll find some water I left it in a bitters
jar
Now there's just enough to prime it with so don'tcha go drinkin'
first
You just pour it in and pump like mad, buddy, you'll quench your
thirst

'You've got to prime the pump, you must have faith and belief
You've got to give of yourself 'fore you're worthy to receive
Drink all the water you can hold, wash your face, cool your feet
Leave the bottle full for others, thank you kindly, Desert Pete'

Well I found that jar and I tell ya nothin' was ever prettier to
my eye
And I was tempted strong to drink it 'cuz that pump looked
mighty dry
But the note went on, 'Have faith my friend, there's water down
below
You got to give until you get I'm the one who ought to know'

So I poured in the jar and I started pumpin' and I heard a
beautiful sound
Of water bubblin' and splashin' up outta that hole in the ground
I took off my shoes and I drunk my fill of that cool refreshing
treat
I thank the Lord and thank the pump and I thank old Desert Pete

'You've got to prime the pump, you must have faith and belief
You've got to give of yourself 'fore you're worthy to receive
Drink all the water you can hold, wash your face, cool your feet
Leave the bottle full for others, thank you kindly, Desert Pete
Drink all the water you can hold, wash your face, cool your feet
Leave the bottle full for others, thank you kindly, Desert Pete'

51.Jackson

We got married in a fever. Hotter than a pepper sprout. We've
been talkin' 'bout Jackson ever since the fire went out.
I'm goin' to Jackson. Gonna mess around. I'm goin' to Jackson.
You know I'm pleasure bound.

Well, you go on, sweet daddy, go ahead and wreck your health.
Play your hand like a lover man and make a big fool of yourself.
Go on to Jackson. Comb your hair. Gotta snowball Jackson. See if
I care.

When I breeze into that city, people gonna scrape and bow. All
them women gonna beg me teach 'em what they don't know how.
I'm goin' down to Jackson. Turn loose my coat. I'm goin' to
Jackson. 'Goodbye,' that's all she wrote.

When they laugh at you in Jackson, I'll be dancin' on the pony
keg. Then I'll lead you 'round town like a scolded hound,
With your tail tucked between your legs.
So, go on down to Jackson. You big talkin' man. I'll be waitin'
in Jackson behind my Japan fan.

52.Those Brown Eyes

Songwriters:Alan Arkin, Bob Carey, Erik Darling, Woody Guthrie

One evening when the sun was low
My brown eyes whispered, 'I must go'
Not one second would she wait
She kissed my cheek and left my gate

Those brown eyes I loved so well
Those brown eyes I long to see
How I long for those brown eyes
Strangers they have grown to be

One night I met her on the street
I tipped my hat but I could not speak
Another man was by her side
Soon I thought she'd be his bride

Those brown eyes I loved so well
Those brown eyes I long to see
How I long for those brown eyes
Strangers they have grown to be

'T was just a year ago today
They laid my own brown eyes away.
Six long years for me she cried
It was her brother by her side

Those brown eyes I loved so well
Those brown eyes I long to see
How I long for those brown eyes
Strangers they have grown to be

55.Ballad Of The Thresher

Songwriters:Searcy Lee Johnson, Don Keyes, Al Nilsen

Oh, the Thresher, the finest atomic ship
That ever dived for the sea
Each man on board was a volunteer
Was there 'cause he chose there to be

Every man jack on board was a hero
Every man jack on board there was brave
Every man jack on board was a hero
Each man risked a watery grave

Oh, their wives and their sweethearts came down to port
Their last fond goodbyes there to say
Each tried her best to be tearless and brave
They promised to meet there some day

Every man jack on board was a hero
Every man jack on board there was brave
Every man jack on board was a hero
Each man risked a watery grave

Then 'Dive', said the Captain and we held our breath
A sound like she'd broken in two
That was the last we ever heard of her
Last word we had of her crew

Every man jack on board was a hero
Every man jack on board there was brave
Every man jack on board was a hero
Each man risked a watery grave

Oh, the Thresher, yes, now her reactor is still
But very good company she keeps
Men from the Lexington, Hornet and the Wasp
Are down there with her in the deep

Every man jack on board was a hero
Every man jack on board there was brave
Every man jack on board was a hero
Each man risked a watery grave

Oh, the Thresher

56.Two-Ten, Six-Eighteen

Songwriters:Rod Mckuen

I've been away so long
Fought a war that's come and gone
Doesn't anybody know my name?
Doesn't anybody know his name?

My sister's up and wed and mama's took to bed
Doesn't anybody know my name?

Please tell me if you can
What time do the trains roll in
Two-ten, six-eighteen, ten forty-four

The hedge is turning brown
And the fence is falling down
Doesn't anybody know my name?
Doesn't anybody know his name?

The girl I left behind has gone to Caroline
Doesn't anybody know my name?

Please tell me if you can
What time do the trains roll in
Two-ten, six-eighteen, ten forty-four

Fought that war across the sea
Almost died to keep us free
Doesn't anybody know my name?
Doesn't anybody know his name?

Now, I'm home and no one cares
Seems the troubles are only theirs
Doesn't anybody know my name?

Please tell me if you can
What time do the trains roll in
Two-ten, six-eighteen, ten forty-four

Doesn't anybody know my name?
Doesn't anybody know his name?

57.Those Who Are Wise

Songwriters:John Stewart

I use to sit in the shade of an old cedar tree
And I dream of the days, what they're holdin' for me
But all those should know who gaze at the sky
It's for those who are wise, only those who are wise

And the west winds would blow, they'd be singing to me
They'd say, 'Look, you, out yonder, just as far as you can see'
But all those should know who gaze at the sky
It's for those who are wise, only those who are wise

And the years went their way as the good years will go
But my dreams linger on in the hills of my home
And young men should know who gaze at the sky
It is you who are wise, only you who are wise

I used to sit in the shade of an old cedar tree

58.Blowin' In The Wind

Songwriters:Bob Dylan

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, an' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?

Yes, an' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, an' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?

Yes, an' how many deaths will it take
'Till he knows that too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

How many years must a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, an' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?

Yes, an' how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

59.Sing Out

(Mike Stewart)

You gotta sing out if you want to get to heaven. You gotta sing
out, join in and pray.
Sing out if you want to get to heaven. Ask the Lord to show you
the way and He'll show you if you pray!

Well, I can sing my title clear to mansions in the sky. I'll bid
farewell to ev'ry fear and wipe my weepin' eye.

Wake up by the trumpet sound, I from the grave shall rise to see
the judge with the glory crown, a view from flaming sky.
